Will Your Desire To Be A Massage Therapist Outlast Your Body’s Ability To Do So?

The average massage therapy career is 7-8 years. The reasons for a short career may vary, but a leading cause is the physical stress put on the body by performing massage.

Perhaps you’ve asked yourself how long your hands, wrists, or thumbs can handle this career. Maybe you’ve considered the risk of getting carpal tunnel.

I have laid in bed and let these thoughts keep me up at night. I asked myself all of these questions early in my career. I began to study ashiatsu barefoot massage ten years ago, and have not worried about my hands, wrists, thumbs, or career length since.

What is Ashiatsu?

When broken down, the word “ashi” means foot and “atsu” means pressure. However, ashiatsu practitioners may also utilize their knees, elbows, palms, and fingers.

Ashiatsu includes the combination of Swedish, myofascial, and compression massage strokes. It includes long gliding strokes associated with Western or Swedish massage, and aspects of the ancient Eastern techniques and philosophies of Shiatsu and Ayurveda. Thai techniques, stretches, and compression may also be used.

This modality has long and interesting history, but a relatively new and growing following here in the United States. It may also be referred to as barefoot massage or gravity assisted massage. Ashiatsu is modern take on an ancient practice.

How Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage Can Extend Your Career

Ashiatsu is efficient! Increased surface area, the laws of gravity, and muscle size all work in your favor.

Increased Surface Area

Compare the surface area of your hand compared to your foot. You can cover a lot of area with your foot than you cannot with your hand. Because increased pressure is spread over a larger surface area, clients can receive a deeper massage without pain.

Gravity

With ashiatsu you will also be using your body weight and gravity to assist in the massage. This will take away a lot of the effort your hands, arms, and shoulders typically exert during a massage session. This allows you to stand up straight and exert pressure from your whole body, not just your upper body weight.

Muscle Size

Compare your biceps to your thighs, or you forearms to your calves. The larger muscles of your legs are designed for hard work!

Dip Your Toe in the Water

Maybe you’re intrigued by barefoot massage; a bit curious about ashiatsu.

Perhaps you’ve researched this technique, but you’re not quite ready to make the commitment to get training.

If you’ve been considering ashiatsu training, you may have asked yourself:

Is it right for me?

Is it worth my time and financial commitment?

Is this safe to learn online?

Will my clients like it?

Introduction to Ashiatsu was designed to answer these questions.

I want to give you the opportunity to see if ashiatsu training is something you want to pursue.

I want to show you that your feet, like your elbows and forearms or stones, are another tool to utilize in your practice.

This course does not include a full routine, and no overhead bar installation instructions are included/required.

A seated routine instructional video is available to allow you to get comfortable using your feet as a massage tool.

You are encouraged to practice on family, friends, volunteers. This will allow you to see firsthand the benefits of barefoot massage while giving your hands a break.

This course will give you a solid overview of barefoot massage, and help you determine whether or not you want to pursue ashiatsu training.

Take the Plunge

Maybe you already know what ashiatsu is all about and you’re ready to add this technique to your massage tool belt.

You have come to an important realization that you can give an effective massage, maybe even a better massage, with your feet.

In Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage, you will learn to take full advantage of gravity, your strong leg muscles, and the surface area of your feet for the benefit of both you and your clients.

You will see that ashiatsu can help you give a great massage at the end of the work day, and also allow you to easily give your deep tissue clients all the pressure they desire. All while you place less stress on your body and hands.

This course will guide you through bar installation based on your office situation, give you tips for choosing a safe massage table, and most importantly instruct you how to give a safe and effective 60 – 90 minute ashiatsu massage.

We will also discuss the history, benefits and contraindications of ashiatsu, as well as proper foot care and sanitizing techniques.

Finally, you will learn about marketing this modality to your current and potential clients, and professionally addressing any concerns they may have.

Taking ashiatsu training does not mean you have to retire your hands. You may choose to make ashiatsu your primary form of massage, or you may use this technique as an occasional substitute to allow your hands to rest.

Not Sure Ashiatsu is Right For You?

A modality so different from mainstream techniques can lead to a lot of doubts.

I’m not sure I can learn a hands-on technique effectively through home study

I truly wish that I could recreate the energy and colleague interaction seminar course, but I cannot. However, there are definite benefits of taking a home study course over a seminar.

Home study seminars allow you to review and absorb the information at your own pace. You can review the videos and do not have to recall every word or key point the instructor said during the course. When you think about it, it is not the 12, 16 or 24 hours you spend in seminars that make you proficient in a modality; it is the time at home reviewing material, practicing on family, friends, colleagues and finally clients that makes us truly proficient in a modality.

You are an adult learner with a good foundation in massage therapy. You know contraindications, endangerment zones, and how to adapt to different clients. This is a safe way to learn a technique. I would not offer this course if I did not believe it was safe for you and your clients to learn in this format.

“Because I’m a slow learner and a visual learner, I tend to do best in a relaxed atmosphere that allows me to absorb the theory, view each technique over and over, if necessary, and practice on friends and family.”
- Erik Dalton

I do not know Asian Theory

The roots of ashiatsu are Asian, but the technique has certainly been Westernized. This course does not cover or require any knowledge of meridians or Asian theory.

I’m not sure I would be able to install bars in my massage space

Detailed schematics are included in the 16 hour course. Bar installation specific to your body and your office is discussed. Standard installation requires a trip to the hardware store, a person with some constructional knowledge, and takes a day or two to install. Bars cost between $50-$300 dollars depending on your situation and whether you hire a contractor to install your bars. You can have them installed while you learn.

I don’t think my clients will want to try it

Client education is an important part of any massage practice, and introducing any new technique can be tricky. We’ve discussed the great benefits of ashiatsu for you, and in the course we will cover the many benefits for your clients.

Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage also provides a section on marketing this technique, including a tip that will have your clients asking you about ashiatsu rather than you introducing it them.

I don’t like the idea of my feet touching my clients

When you think about all of the things your hands touch in a day, are your feet really that dirty? The course covers techniques for thoroughly cleansing and warming your feet before each session. Upkeep, foot care and softening techniques you can use between sessions are also addressed.

I weigh too much or more than my clients

Do you weigh too much to give your client a massage with your hands? In this class, you will have one foot on the table and one foot on your clients. Your whole body weight is never on your client. Ashiatsu can be practiced by therapists all shapes and sizes.

Although there are no weight restrictions for this course, I do recommend a massage table that can easily hold the working weight of you and your client. Table recommendations are also discussed.

Will I have to sign a Non-Compete Agreement?

No. The course material is copyrighted, so you may not redistribute the content as your own. However, if you have a desire to teach barefoot massage and feel you have something unique to offer the massage world, I encourage you to pursue it!

Take Your Career Out Of Your Hands

The key to a long massage career is taking care of your body. Ashiatsu allows you to relieve your hands from the rigors of traditional techniques, and use your body in a more efficient way.

Being proactive about the health of your body will lead to a longer, happier career.

“This was the best online course I have ever taken by far – and I have taken a lot! I would take any course from you.

Your sense of humor and personal experiences made this course very enjoyable to read and understand. The eBook was such an enjoyable read that I breezed through it quite quickly, understood it well, and actually had trouble putting it down!

I loved how easily you broke down how to market this modality in a very realistic but simple way. Awesomely put together…from head to toes!”
